The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
